JW WOw. You don’t quite expect them to lay it out as clear as that, do you? They can really convince themselves noone’s listening, can’t they. Just look at that poor sap. “When people get a little something to lose, they’ll get selfish. Then we got em. Unless they feel an obligation to society. Then we don’t got em. That’s when we make fun of their foreign sounding names and draw horns on big photos of them.

Skeptical Surrealist Well…. they see education taking people away from them not as evidence that smart people reject their talking points, but that education is really a conspiracy against them. It’s true. Many good hearted Americans retreated into Academia when there was no call to do anything else but flip burgers and make payday loans, and thought they would help educate future gens about the issues of war and capitalism and some of the repressed history. That’s what GOP accuse academia of tolerating, and I must say some of it is guilty as charged. But to me it always did seem like academic rads tended to be the Man’s Own Tamed Militants, well fed in gilded cages to squawk forth some emasculated version of lefty free thinking ideals to vaccinate future middle management against all that stuff. They always were kind of fooling themselves, like liberalism generally. New Deal Liberalism was an effort to preserve Capitalism against the possibility of real change, not to really make it just and fair. Just and Fair are the negative Reciprocal of Profitable, so Profit will be against Justice 80% of the time. The one hopeful factor is that power not only corrupts, it stupefies. And absolute power stupefies absolutely. Maybe it wasn’t syphilis that made 500 years of European monarchs, bat shit crazy. maybe it was power itself. Nothing like a good rant to start the day.
